High notes can be the bane of every singer’s existence.
When they work, it’s incredibly exciting and satisfying for both audience and performer. It’s often what gets you paid the big bucks as well, but we do it all for art not money, right?
In this exercise, we explore one of the ways to explore the top range without causing vocal damage, or singing until your voice is tired and sore.
This exercise is from a family of exercises entitled “partial occlusion.” It simply means that something is closed or occluded and therefore allows us to sing with a little less pressure than normal. It’s incredibly useful to explore the high range and fine-tune the resonant space without having to also deal with the right amount of breath pressure and/or support.
